Hi there!
My name is Boris, you can find me most places in the ATmosphere as @bmann.ca. I’m based in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and I’m a new mod/admin helping manage the site here.
I’m also one of the three project leads for the AT Community Fund, along with @ngerakines and @knowtheory.
I’m personally excited to help grow Smoke Signal as a big, varied, Lexicon type that is applicable around the world very locally, as well as broadly around shared communities of interest. Aside from micro-blog posts, I think event data is something that can be truly global interest!
Some friends in Vancouver are putting together a Venue Co-Op – a group of musicians, artists, performers, promoters, and more. I’m hoping to help run a local Vancouver instance that supports this. I’m not sure if one Smoke Signal “instance” can/should be different topics, but I also help manage a bunch of Luma calendars for Vancouver, for DWebYVR and Z-Space to name two, which might also run on the same instance? Not sure!
I’m very interested in Smoke Signal to power events, ticketing, and conferences. For conferences, this is having a multi-day schedule, perhaps beyond that to CFP deadlines or other dates, and going down to maybe events-per-talk. From there you can get social features of all kinds that are then linked to various parts of the conference.
For larger conferences that are more of a “come here for a week and there are lots of side events” – e.g. Web Summit Vancouver, or Devconnect – there’s a use case of letting anyone submit, and then being able to curate and feature different versions of all the events, or powering someone’s personal calendar for a week with one system.
Finally, I want to see lots of products built on top of “Smoke Signal the events backend”.
Can I use it instead of Luma for a bunch of things is step one for a lot of my usage, either directly on the “global site”, or if there is a “mini app” that I can run?
Can Gander add events as the second lexicon to their IG/FB-like app, and have a rich set of public event data for all of Canada?
