Open Source License

I chose the MIT license for Smoke Signal because it aligns with the project’s goals of openness, accessibility, and community collaboration. Smoke Signal is an event and RSVP management and discovery application built on ATProtocol—an ecosystem rooted in decentralization and portability. By using the MIT license, I’m removing barriers to adoption and encouraging developers, communities, and organizations to build, adapt, and extend the project freely.

This permissive licensing approach supports a broader vision: enabling federated tools and services without imposing restrictive terms or obligations. Whether someone wants to self-host, fork, contribute, or incorporate Smoke Signal into a larger system, the MIT license makes that easy.

Open sourcing Smoke Signal under these terms is an invitation—for experimentation, for contribution, and for stewardship beyond a single maintainer.
